More than factual accuracy
Many traditions condemn deliberate falsehood, but they also ask whether speech is harmful, trustworthy, socially responsible or consistent with good intention.
Conflicting duties
Truth-telling can conflict with privacy, protection from violence, professional confidentiality and avoidance of unnecessary cruelty. A defensible ethic must distinguish deception for exploitation from limited concealment used to prevent severe harm.
Evidence and humility
Truthfulness also requires acknowledging uncertainty and correcting claims when evidence changes.
